Chic Aid is very proud to be sponsoring singer/songwriter Sascha Taylor-Curtis.

As the autobiography on her myspace page demonstrates, Sascha's approach to her need to use crutches reflects the attitude of Chic Aid; Needing to use crutches doesn't mean that you're unable to achieve in life!

However, I had a small fit when I was a few days old and received a lumber puncture which caused nerve and muscle damage. So I now use crutches to compensate for the weakness in the lower part of my left leg. I first developed a real love for music when I was 7 years old and got my first keyboard. I would spend my weekends writing songs and learning bits and bobs on the guitar so I could play and sing. When I was 14 I would busk with my boyfriend at Underground stations for a few hours a week to earn some extra cash. To this day, it’s still the best hourly rate I’ve ever made. I am self taught on the guitar and keyboard and reached grade 4 in singing. I have also studied music technology and I use Cubase to produce my songs at an amateur level. I usually write songs on the guitar, although sometimes I start with an instrumental track and add lyrics to it to produce a different sound. I have written over 60 songs and use my relationships, family and friends as inspiration. I sometimes write songs with a darker side – discussing controversial topics - even though I don’t feel this sort of mood matches the person I am. I feel that writing allows me to explore darker aspects of my personality that I wouldn’t normally show others. In most ways I am just like everyone else. I have dreams, aspirations and desires to succeed at what I love to do. However, I’m a girl who uses crutches and generally you don’t tend to see that on TV or in the charts. Hopefully that’s all about to change as I feel it’s time that people like me have someone to represent them in this industry.

All products made by HMS-VILGO meet European Community standards and have a CE examination certificate. HMS-VILGO quality is ISO 9001 version 2000 and ISO 13485 version 2003

The crutches from HMS-Vilgo are all available in the following choice of 18 colours

     Full cuff elbow crutches
Height adjustable elbow crutches with articulated cuffs from Vilgo, are available in 3 sizes:
   • Standard (471) • Luxury (771) • XL (771L)
The crutches can all be obtained in Vilgo's full range of colours. Please note that the cuffs and handles are not available in colours to match the tubes.
    Standard
    The adjustable standard crutches (471) measure 74cm / 97cm (29in / 38in),
weigh 545g (1.2lbs) and are suitable for a user of weight up to 90kg (14st).

   Luxury
The luxury (771) crutches are adjustable in two places; the length of
the tube can be adjusted both above and below the handle.
  They measure 74cm / 97cm (29in / 38in), weigh 650g (1.4lbs)
and are suitable for a user of weight up to 120kg (19st)
XL Like the luxury crutches the XL luxury crutch can be adjusted in two places, the length of the tube is adjustable above and below the handle. Made of steel they measure 76 to 106cm (30 - 42in), weigh 1.5 kg (3.3lbs) and are suitable for people up to 180kg (28stone).
Coloured comfort cuff elbow crutches Comfort cuff elbow crutches provide support for your arm, while being less restrictive for your clothes. Height adjustable comfort cuff crutches are available in 2 styles and are all available in Vilgo’s full range of colours:
   • Style • Ellipse
    Style coloured crutches
The Style crutches have a black cuff with shafts available in a choice from the 16 colours in Vilgo’s colour range.

  Lightweight - weighing just 560g (1.2lbs) Height adjustable - height is between 73cm / 100cm (29in / 39in), Robust - suitable for a person of a weight up to 150kg (24st).

Ellipse Designer crutches Ellipse, designer, half cuff crutches demonstrate the design and creativity that can go in to crutches! The Ellipse crutches get their name from the unique elliptical shape of the tube. Like the Style crutches, they too, have comfort half cuffs in black. Not only are they available in the usual choice of colours, but they have an additional flash of colour at the top of the stick and on the handle in a choice of colour from red, yellow, blue and mint green. The second colour doesn't only serve an aesthetic purpose; The band at the top of the crutch is made of a non-slip material, enabling the crutch to be rested against a table or similar object. The handle is shaped in such a way that the crutch can be safely rested against a wall against the coloured triangle at the back of the handle.

   Half-cuff crutches

Half cuff elbow crutches offer less support for the user than full cuff crutches. They do, however, offer greater support than

a walking stick. They are great if you are fed up of buttons being pulled off the cuffs of your clothes, and the line of your sleeves being ruined when putting your arm through full cuff crutches.

HMS-Vilgo manufacture a half cuff crutch with matching coloured cuff. They are available in red, pastel green, apricot, lagoon, black and lilac.

Vilgo crutches

Published Date: 23 June 2009 By Kate McGarvey

I used to have very negative ideas about what being disabled means.

The first person to challenge my negative thoughts about disability, pointed out that people who wear glasses are, in the literal sense of the word, disabled; they are physically unable to perform a physical function without an aid; they need glasses to correct their vision.

The second time that my views were challenged was by a counsellor. She asked me whether I had known anybody disabled growing up and I answered no. Then on further reflection, I said that I suppose there was my Gran, she was housebound due to severe arthritis, and needed to use a wheelchair or scooter to go any distance outside. And then I remembered my auntie, she was born with just two partially formed fingers on her right hand. The counsellor then asked me what I thought of as disabled and my answer was Stephen Hawkins!

I had not thought of either of my relatives as being disabled as they both lived/live life to the full. When my gran died, aged 83, there were over 100 people at her funeral, because she had such an impact on other people’s lives. My auntie still works as a primary school teacher.

At last I acknowledged that there is a whole spectrum of disability in which we are merely a shade. I personally feel that the more brightly coloured our accessories are, we are helping to eliminate the stupid negative images of disability such as those that I used to hold.

Show everybody that being disabled doesn't mean being sad!

When I wanted a pair of coloured crutches, I didn't actually think about why I wanted them. Or about the dramatic boost that they would bring.

Looking back, I realise that I was embarrassed about using anything that would be an obvious sign of my disability. I didn't want the label of being disabled, and all that can suggest to people. I was embarrassed; other people seemed embarrassed to talk to me. If I wasn't actually invisible, I felt it and more importantly, I wanted to be.

Without realising it, using coloured crutches changed my self image. I didn't look as though I was embarrassed by my crutches, so other people weren't embarrassed by them. Complete strangers would approach me just to talk about my lovely pink crutches. My self confidence grew.

Coloured crutches really did change my life and I started my business to share that experience.

Since starting Chic Aid, I am able to add the sale of crutches to this list. In the lead up to Christmas, I find that the most popular crutches are Ellipse crutches in black with a red cuff. In spring, my most popular colours are the more delicate, pastel colours; pink, lilac, pastel green. In summer, my most popular style of crutch are the IZP folding crutches – they can be stowed in the overhead locker on planes, or even put in suitcases folded up. I often hear from customers who are looking forward to getting their new, coloured crutches to take on holiday or to use at a wedding or another special occasion. These are the most common times for family snaps to be taken, so with this in mind, I am establishing a Chic Aid customer photo gallery. I am hoping to receive photographs from customers that show them using their Chic Aid crutches. If you have any photographs of yourself with the coloured crutches that you bought from Chic Aid that you would be happy to have included in the gallery, please send them to me at a JPEG file at ChicAideKate@AOL.com . When we hear the word designer linked to a product, we often think of a named label being attached to that product. The Ellipse designer crutches don't have a name-designer, but they do display the strong evidence of the thought process that has gone in to designing them!

The first thing makes that you notice design that these crutches have been designed, is the fact that they are elliptical in shape - not just the standard round pole that we may be more used to seeing.

The next thing that you notice is the coloured band around the neck of the shaft in a colour that is picked up on the handle and in the small coloured triangle at the back of the cuff.

The extra colour is not only for the sake of putting extra colour on the crutches. The coloured band is made from a non-slip material which reduces the chance of the crutch falling if you lean it against something like a table. The covering on the handle is rubber, helping these crutches to be more comfortable on your hands than the more standard plastic. With the coloured plastic triangled, the crutches and be balanced to lean against a wall.

It is the obvious thought process that has gone into designing these crutches that make them designer.

I have been using my designer crutches, in pastel pink with blue as the second colour, for 3 years now. Twice I have been tempted to try a different style of crutch, but I always come back to the designer crutches

For a few years now, people have been asking me whether I sold folding crutches with a full cuff and the answer has been 'no'. Not anymore! I am pleased to introduce The Quickstep.

The quickstep is 67cm when folded and has full cuffs with anatomic handles.

Of course, there is a downside - the quickstep is only available in 2 colours; grey and orange (The orange is not a bright orange and has been refered to as 'winter leaves').

I hope you don't mind me contacting you but we bought one of your crutch bags and it has been fantastic. I just wanted to let you know that I have had so many comments about it as nobody appears to have ever seen one! Everywhere I go people remark on what a good idea it is - even when I was at the hospital recently in the plaster room the nurses thought it was fabulous. Anyway, just a bit of feedback for you! Kind Regards

Hi Kate, My Mother's crutches arrived today, great service! Do you sell black ferrules for when the originals ware out? I've tried for years to get "unusual" crutches for my Mum but only found them for kids, not adults. I will certainly pass on your details for others that ask, my Mum's kept your card in her purse just in case anyone asks. Cheers Neil.15/06/11

I have been very busy working with Jimmy Gittins to introduce a range of crutches in club colours.

Many different types of clubs have supporters who use crutches. Why not show your support for your club by having crutches which reflect your team colours?

The Ellipse designer crutches have been our choice for the extra personalisation; With Jimmy’s RFL background, we have initially acquired a sample of crutches in Rugby club colours. Watch out for photos coming soon!

Club colours

It is becoming a bit of a habit, me apologising for not having updated my blog for so long, so I won't bother this time. Suffice to say I have been busy - both personally and with Chic Aid!

Some of you are aware that Chic Aid was closed for two weeks at the beginning of August; I had a holiday! 16 family members spent a fortnight in a chateau between Tolouse and Carcasonne in the south of France. We actually managed to get some sun down there and with no mobile phone or internet access, I had a proper break - I even read a couple of books, something I used to do a lot, but don't seem to do so much with my attention being given to either my phone or the computer. There are so many gadgets to make your life easier today, but the gadgets seem to take up time, leaving you (or certainly me!) feeling as though there is less time to do anything :-(

Having a holiday takes up a lot more time than the 2 weeks that you are actually away; there is clothes shopping to do and packing before you go, then when you get back, you need to adjust to fit back into your daily routine ;-)

Meanwhile, there have been The School Holidays. Joe has been very good; 2 weeks in France with 4 cousins and a swimming pool helped to occupy him, as did a week in Wales with his Dad and another week spent at his dad's house, but now, he is bored. I am so looking forward to him going back to school on Wednesday.

On to Chic Aid, I really have been busy here too! For a long time, I have felt frustrated whenever I see a sports personality on the news using grey crutches following a temporary injury; surely a member of a sports team would want to demonstrate their alliegance to the club they play for, despite being temporarily unable to play. With this in mind, and interest in the idea from Jimmy Gittins, a former profesional Rugby League player, I approached HMS-Vilgo about customising the Ellipse designer crutches for use by injured players or team supporters. Chic Aid is delighted to introduce Ellipse crutches in Club Colours. Hopefully, I will soon have photos of supporters included on the Customer photos page of the Website ( HINT HINT )

Gosh it’s been busy at Chic Aid!
I am having a new brochure put together so spent one morning with the guys from the design company , photographing crutches (and being photographed myself :))
I also had a visit from my direct contact at Kowsky and her boss. We have agrees a price reduction to me for Kowsky crutches, a reduction that has been reflected in the price of Kowsky crutches at the Chic Aid website. Most now cost 15% less than they did in October!
After such glorious weather this week, we are now hearing that temperatures will be dropping to much nearer the seasonal average this week. I have also heard from a few different sources that Winter this year could be as bad as the winter experienced last year :( With this in mind, I have started to place orders for ice spikes for crutches. They were a big seller last year and if you weren’t one of the customers who bought a pair, it may be worth getting your pre-order in early!
Talking of seasons brings my mind to the Seasonal celebration – Christmas. A pair of coloured crutches are a great idea for your Christmas present list – especially if they are in one of the Brilliant (Metallic) colours from Kowsky. Or if you are going to a Christmas party before Christmas, treat yourself and finish off your party outfit with a pair of stylish crutches.

As of 18th October 2010, Chic Aid became VAT registered.

Most of my customers will not be affected by this change in status as items purchased for the use of a person who is chronically sick or disabled, in conection with their illness or disability are zero rated. It will however mean that I will be asking questions as to the nature of the qualifing medical condition.

VAT

  <SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: rgb(64,64,64); FONT-SIZE: 14pt">Propolis and me
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: rgb(64,64,64); FONT-SIZE: 14pt">
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> Five years ago, I visited a honey bee exhibition. At the exhibition, I read about various products produced by the honey bees that spanned the obvious i.e. honey through to products that I had never heard of before. Propolis was one of the products that I had never heard of before.
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> Bees use propolis as a sealant for unwanted open spaces in the hive but it has also been used by natural medicine practitioners for the relief of various conditions, including inflammations , viral diseases, ulcers , superficial burns or scalds.
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> Propolis is also believed to promote heart health, strengthen the immune system and reduce the chances of cataracts . Old beekeepers recommend a piece of propolis kept in the mouth as a remedy for a sore throat.
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> I decided to see whether propolis could do anything for me. I purchased a tub of propolis capsules from www.beehealth.co.uk . The standard recommended dose was between 1 and 4 capsules/ day but after researching on the internet, the suggested supplementation for M.S. is 7 capsules/ day.
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> There was no miracle cure. I continued to experience M.S. related issues and my general condition continued to deteriorate; I am now a regular wheelchair user for any distance over 50 metres, however I continue to be able to walk for shorter distances.
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> On a few occasions I have thought that my propolis habit was expensive for something I wasn’t sure was actually doing anything for me and have stopped taking it for a few weeks. I went back onto the propolis after realising that I was finding it increasingly difficult to walk, even around my house. I became more mobile at home again when I resumed taking the capsules.
<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'; COLOR: #404040"> Given my experience, I would recommend it to anyone with M.S.or any other mobility problems

In a nut shell VAT exemption allows chronically sick or disabled people to buy eligible items at 0% VAT thus saving them money. Who is eligible for VAT relief? To be eligible for VAT relief the government says you have to fit the following criteria, Charities – simply provide your charity number. A person is ‘chronically sick or disabled’ if he/she is a person: * with a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon his/her ability to carry out everyday activities; * with a condition which the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes; or * Who is terminally ill. Important Note: It does NOT include a frail elderly person who is otherwise able-bodied or any person who is only temporarily disabled or incapacitated, such as with a broken limb. What proof do we need to provide? In order to waive VAT on your purchase, the government requires a simple declaration to be made as to the nature of your disability at the time of ordering. No proof of your disability need be shown to any party at any time. Its very easy to claim VAT relief, all we need to know is the name, address &amp; disability of the person the item is for &amp; what there chronic sickness or disability is. We don’t need a doctor’s letter or any reference numbers. If you believe that your purchase falls into the above criteria, please give us a call, or send an e-mail to request the short VAT waiver form. Which Items are eligible? VAT Exemption only applies to certain items; these are items which have been designed to be used by someone who is chronically sick or disabled. Examples of such products are Mobility Scooters, Wheelchairs, Bath Lifts &amp; many more daily living aids. Displayed Prices The prices that are displayed on our website exclude VAT. Things to Remember We do NOT decide if an item is or isn’t exempt &amp; we don’t make any more or less money if we charge you VAT or we don’t charge you VAT. If you do not complete the VAT ememption form, or you are not eligible for VAT relief, we are obliged to charge you the full 20% VAT on the whole of your order. If you fail to return any VAT emeption forms to us we WILL invoice you for the outstanding VAT. Not all of our products are eligible for VAT relief, so we are obliged to charge VAT for those products even after you complete this form. Quickstep Walking Aids
How can the Quickstep Walking Aid not be in our featured products list? Described as a walking aid, to emphasise it’s difference in appearance from conventional crutches, the Quickstep was designed by an engineer in consultation with crutch users and the result is the Rolls Royce of crutches! OK, what makes it so different?
  • It’s telescopic folding action enables it to fold to a length of 67cm
  • Extension length is remembered for use; when using the crutches and extending the height, they stop extending at the remembered point.
  • The folded crutches are designed to be self supporting, with the cuff having three small feet to stand the crutch up on. Alternatively, they can be clamped onto a table by lowering the cuff extension to clamp the table between the cuff and the handle.
  • They don’t look like standard crutches!

Yours sincerely Sylvia 27/5/2009 Hello Kate Just to let you know that my comfort cuff crutches arrived this morning and I am over the moon with them. Thank you so much for the prompt service and speedy delivery and I will highly recommend you to all my friends. My only problem now is which colour to order next!!! Mary 08/09/2009 Hi Kate I just wanted to say a big thank you for sending my crutches out so quickly! They only took 2 days from the day of order to the day I received them. I already have the folding crutches in Pink and decided that I needed a more sombre pair for serious occasions so I ordered them in Black. Now having a think about what colour to order next!!! Wishing you well and I hope that the business continues to thrive. I used the purple one to get up to school and Eva came out squealing oh wow mummy its gorgeous! The handle is much more comfortable than the NHS ones! It is a great service you offer, you are a star - shame that we are in need of crutches in the first place, but hey, we have to make the best of things. I cant tell you how chuffed I am with my new image! I hope things go well for you and the business in the future. Best wishes Steph 19/09/08 I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for sending my crutches out so quickly! I only ordered them on Monday and received them yesterday! I was recommended the folding crutches by a friend on Facebook who has them, so I finally took the plunge and ordered them in pink. I love them, my husband thinks that they are great too, I'm now drawing up a wish list of colours that I would like. I’m really pleased with them! Wishing you well and good luck with the business, I'll definitely be recommending your services. Lisa 04/07/2008 Thanks again for the crutches - sell yourself more - get at the top when people do a search. You deserve to be noticed!! Deb 25/06/08 I will now have a look to see what colour my next pair will be..co-ordinating crutches certainly make a difference., hope you are well, regards Erica x Erica 18/06/08 Just have to say a big thank you for the fantastic service. My blue lagoon folding crutches arrived this morning, and for the first time for years I'm really looking forward to being at my daughter's dance show tonight amongst all her friends. I'm quite excited at the thought of going out with my new crutches - thank you. I only wish I'd taken the plunge ages ago and ordered these from you on-line before. I was worried about all the horror stories we hear about folks buying things over the internet, but I have to say this couldn't have been easier (and safer). So cheers Kate, and keep up the good work. (I'm definitely going to get some full cuff pastel green ones from you next month!) The crutches arrived yesterday. The pink and mint green is a fabulous combination and my wife is over the moon with them. The first trip out with them was to the local supermarket, where every other person commented on them. There were of course the usual fuddy duddies who just stared lol. Thank you once again. Richard Parker 01/12/2007 Hi Kate I just wanted to say a big thankyou for sending my crutches out so quickly! I only ordered them on Thursday and received them yesterday! They look so much nicer in pastel blue than NHS metal grey and I’m really pleased with them! There were plenty of websites for funky walking sticks but yours was the only website I came across for nice, affordable coloured crutches. Wishing you well, Regards, Louise 24/11/2007 Hi Kate, I just thought I would let you know that the crutches arrived safely yesterday, thank you so much! They are absolutely brilliant, I love them. I'm off on holiday this week so will be proudly sporting my funky new accessories! Thanks again and well done on such a great website. Love Anne xx 17/11/2007 I have to say I didn't feel so much of a difference until I had to go back to using my NHS crutches because of the stopper incident and they are oh so awful lol!!! Anyway I work in the airport in Belfast and so many people have asked me where I got them so I’ve passed on the address so hope I get ya some new business!! Amy Belfast 30/10/07 Hi Kate Just like to say a big THANK YOU received the crutches and over the moon with them . I have left your feedback please leave mine when you have time. its been an absolute pleasure dealing with you . I put your shop on the forums I go on !!! xx christine I absolutely love my pink ellipse crutches and have relegated my home sprayed pink crutches to the shed!!!!! loving your coloured crutches Sarah Preston 21/07/07 Hi Kate, Got the crutches yesterday and Dad loved them, thank you so much Amanda x Hemsworth 14/07/07 Hello there, Just wanted to say thank you so much for the lovely pink crutches, and for the super-fast delivery! I am so pleased to be able to go off on my holiday without those nasty uniform grey things...yuk..they make me feel so decrepid! I am so happy I found you, thank you so much. You have absolutely made my day! Loraine Soham 11/07/07 I was a very satisfied customer until my friend saw my crutches and wanted them for herself!!! Being such a good friend, I have given my beautiful blue crutches to her Ah well, at least I knew where to come back to, I'm looking forward to my new pair arriving. Heather - Nettybridge 01/07/07 What a great idea!!!. Since I became a bit less mobile (full-time crutches/wheelchair) thanks to the lovely MS, like you I have become totally mad about co-ordinating sticks - specs and sticks are the new shoes and handbag, don't ya know!! ;-) I've got pairs in brushed bronze, dark red and the usual black folding jobbies, but the idea of 16 different colours..... wowee!! Helen B - Edinburgh 18/06/2007 I hate using crutches because everyone stares and it makes me really insecure. I'd really like to just go out and feel comfortable about being on crutches - only if they're there to slightly take some weight off my feet. I've been looking for ages for 'funky' crutches - I found some in America but they were something like $200 without shipping and without customs/tax. There were others on ebay but they weren't full colour and it looked slightly odd with blue/red etc against medical silvery grey. So THANKYOU for doing what you're doing! Hopefully I stop feeling like I'm 90 not 19! Yours sincerely, Liz McNee 10/09/10

Dear Kate My blue crutches have arrived safely, and I am delighted with them. Ever since I saw a French fellow patient with a pair when I was in hospital, I have been trying to find a shop that sold them - without success. I congratulate you on having the initiative to track them down and stock them (and also on your speedy service). I wouldn't be surprised if before long I am tempted to order another pair in a different colour. With kind regards Jane 08/09/10

Hi Kate Just a quick note to say how pleased I am with the crutches! So comfortable, and the folding is very convenient. I have put a link to your site on my blog, in my article about Broken Femur Essentials! http://dreamsandreality-jj.blogspot.com/2010/09/broken-femur-essentials.html Kind regards Jenny 05/09/10

Hi Kate, I used my single crutch this morning ( I was in my electric wheelchair ) and was thrilled with the whole performance but know I need to practice as when I paid for my food at the butchers I had a little bit juggle but managed and it is surprising how the colour attracted help like bees around the honey-pot!! I have decided to defer my decision on the magnets until I see how I go and may or not get back to you. I have just written to the O.T. at Disability North at The Dene Centre (she gave me your address) to express my delight with the whole purchasing thing - including your helpful support - and felt your company left the others outstanding both in design and particularly weight of the crutches; what a joy not to come back with extra shoulder girdle pain and it may defer my shoulder replacement!! I shall be in touch when I get home if I change my mind and once again "Many Thanks", Kate. Kind Regards,, Joan 19/08/10

   Hi Kate
   WOW!!! I love my crutches!!!
They came Friday, which was absolutely fantastic as I was just being discharged from hospital on the same day and felt like a Princess when I left the ward with my funky pink crutches!! I am so pleased with them and now wonder why I put up with my boring, grey, soulless NHS ones for so long.
One question I meant to ask was can you get hold of purple ferrules separately, as I'm sure they will wear out?
   Kindest Regards Maxine xx 19/07/10

Good Evening Just a quick e-mail to say many thanks for sending my order so quickly. I am very pleased with the fuschia crutches - are they a new colour. I can see some of the colours on the website but not all the colours that are available (in the style of crutch I like). Will you be updating the page that depicts the colours available? I will e-mail you some more photos in due course. Best Wishes. Deirdre

Hi Kate, Just to thank you for your delivery of the crutch which my friend collected from his neighbour this evening, very efficient and will be a great help to me coping with Gatwick Airport on Friday and Saturday. Many thanks Peter 23/06/10

Hello Kate!! Just thought I'd drop you a note to let you know I received my beautiful Pink Crutches this afternoon!! They are gorgeous, so much more lighter than my previous pair of elbow crutches, and no clicking every time I walk!! I am so very pleased to get rid of my NHS looking drab grey pair, and feel these will give me more confidence in myself, letting people know that I accept my crutches as part of me, and therefore I shall make them look pretty and accessorize!!! Thank you so much for these gorgeous "accessories" I will more than likely be back for more in a different shade!! Thank you again Lisa 11/6/10
Hi Kate My crutches arrived this morning, im so pleased with them.. they even match the colour of my car! (I want that car!!! Kate) Thanks again. Claire 11/6/10

Hi, Thank you so much for all the help you have given me - what a brilliant service you offer. I am delighted with my new folding crutches &amp; am really pleased with the colour choice (they arrived so quickly too). The cuff takes a bit of getting used to - but I'm getting there!! One tiny niggle from the manufacturers point - the extension piece is not coloured - which as I'm not tall at all only a short piece of grey metal shows - sorry, but I had to mention it. Now - which colour would I like next.... Thanks again, Rosemarie 23/5/10
Hi Many thanks it arrived before I had got out of bed!!! amazing service. Thanks for all the advice and the friendly chatter yesterday. No more falls for me now. Thanks again Best wishes Chris 14/05/10
  Hi Kate
Just thought I'd let you know that my crutches arrived safely this morning as promised and I absolutely love them! Thank you so much for your assistance and it was a pleasure speaking to you yesterday. I wish you all the very best for your business and your future personally.

Hi Kate, just wanted to let you know how much I am pleased with my new lilac crutches. I have chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis and have recently had a new hip replacement. which is great. Alas my knees need replacing too. After using the NHS crutches I realised that they helped me to get up and down stairs without having to suffer that awful pain for days after. So I use my new crutches when I am out and about, and I can now return the NHS ones so that someone else can benefit from them. They are a great colour too. Thank you with best wishes

   Tina. x 08/05/10
Dear Kate, Just to say thank you for the excellent service you provided to me yesterday. My lilac crutches (hitherto known as my purple sticks of awesomeness!) arrived today and are fabulous! You'll no doubt be hearing from my mum in due course who has promised to buy me a pink pair for my birthday in July - she was much in admiration of them Thanks again Kate Tracy 17/03/10
Hi Kate, a huge thank you for once again providing such a prompt and reliable service. My new crutches are brilliant and I'm so pleased with the comfy handles. We have snow again today so will shortly be trying out the Winter Ferrules with the wheel away ice-spikes. I couldn't believe it when the parcel arrived 23 hours after I ordered them!! - How's that for service!!! Thank you. Best wishes, Rosie

Mrs Just was in the pink for her daughter's wedding. She told me 'My pink crutches were a big hit with my outfit at my daughter's wedding...It was the first time that I haven't cared about using crutches in 18 years. She told me 'so many people commented on them and I got lots of compliments – I was even asked for your web address by a couple of ladies, so hopefully you might acquire a couple of new customers! My only disappointment is, for some reason my outfit and the crutches do not completely match in the photo, but in “real life” they were a perfect colour match!!'

Wedding Photos

                                          Holiday photos!

Coloured Crutches

Forearm crutches are also known as elbow crutches or Canadian crutches. There are 3 styles of cuff available at Chic-Aid

  Comfort cuff
Elbow crutches offer more support than half cuff crutches and give similar support to that offered by full cuff crutches.
  Full cuff
This is the style of crutch that most people are familiar with. This style crutch is most commonly used by the NHS.
  Half cuff
Crutches with a half cuff offer less support than full cuff but greater than a walking stick. Great if you are fed up of buttons being pulled off the cuffs of your clothes, or sleeves being ruined when putting your arm through full cuff crutches.
Coloured Comfort Crutches
Comfort cuff elbow crutches provide more support for your arm, while being less restrictive for your clothes. Height adjustable comfort cuff crutches are available in 2 styles and 14 colours:

Style

Ellipse
Style have a black cuff and 14 colours.

   Lightweight - weighing just 560g (1.2lbs)
  Height adjustable - so length is between measure 73cm / 100cm (29in / 39in),
  Robust - suitable for a person of a weight up to 150kg (24st). <IMG style="FLOAT: none; CURSOR: pointer" onclick="ImagePopup('/Sites/31/Media/Style 2.jpg', 'Style 2.jpg');" alt="Style 2.jpg" src="/Sites/31/Media/Style%202.Thumbnail.jpg">
  Ellipse
Ellipse designer half cuff crutches demonstrate the design and creativity that can go in to crutches!

Full Cuff Elbow Crutches

At Chic-Aid, height adjustable crutches with articulated cuffs are available in 3 sizes:

Standard (471)

Luxury (771)

XL (771L)
The crutches can all be obtained in the full range of colours. Please note that the cuffs and handles are not available in colours to match the tubes.
Standard
The adjustable standard crutches (471) measure 74cm / 97cm (29in / 38in), weigh 545g (1.2lbs) and are suitable for a user of weight up to 90kg (14st).
Luxury
The luxury (771) crutches are adjustable in two places; the length of the tube can be adjusted both above and below the handle. They measure 74cm / 97cm (29in / 38in), weigh 650g (1.4lbs) and are suitable for a user of weight up to 120kg (19st)

I was diagnosed with M.S. in 1996. Despite severe symptoms initially, these settled down and my condition was barely noticeable to most people until after the birth of my son in 2003. Finding it increasingly difficult to walk unaided, I resorted to using crutches. But they were so drab and grey! If I had to use them, I at least wanted them to be pink! It sounded so simple but even on the internet, pink crutches were hard to find.

Having pink crutches made a big difference to how I saw myself and how other people saw me. I felt more confident and people would come and talk to me just to talk about my crutches. I felt less ‘disabled’.

I decided that I wanted to share the magical confidence boost that my pink crutches had given me, with other crutch users. I went ahead and established ChicAide in 2006.

Now, in 2009, with so many satisfied customers, I am moving the business on with a new web-site and a new name - Chic-Aid. I hope to continue to spread the word about coloured crutches. I want everybody with a need to use crutches to have the opportunity to express their individuality with their crutches and to stop feeling invisible or embarrassed because of them.

Customer service has always been my main priority. You can read some of the comments that I have received from customers on this site, and do let me know if you have any comments of your own to add. I can be contacted by e-mail, telephone and mail using the following details

Here are two accessories for your crutches that address this problem:
The Snap-on is such a simple idea; a magnet that fastens onto a stick or crutch, with secure strapping, enabling it to be safely parked on metal e.g. car door, fridge cooker, radiators, etc……

A single Snap-on with clip includes a pocket clip, allowing the crutch or stick on their pocket.

Snap-on for crutches comes with two Snap-on attachments. These
enable a pair of crutches to stick together and be safely <SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 115%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'">parked.

  Park sticks/crutches on fridges

on Washing machines and on radiators

on cars or even on the Snap-on parking plate!

Vilgo elbow strap

The manufacturer of the crutches sold on this site, Vilgo, has addressed the problem of dropping crutches with an elbow strap . A cord loops over the cuff of a half cuff crutch. At the other end, the cord is attached to a Velcro strap enabling users to secure it around their elbow.
